<p>With a diversified agenda the 19th ITS World Congress
produced an abundance of impressions. A large number of impressive
stands strung together at the exhibition and there was always
something to see and to try out at each of them. In the
presentation area of the Austrian stand speeches and discussions
took place continuously. And last but not least the demo programme
offered many occasions to gain new insights. With this large amount
of content it is even more important to have some fun and a good
meal. Consequently, and in accordance with Viennese tradition, a
Gala Dinner, followed by the first ever ITS Ball took place in the
former imperial residence Vienna Hofburg. The members of the ITS
Community didn't miss the opportunity to show their dancing
skills.</p>

<p>Naturally, the congress was accompanied by photographers and
even a television crew, who caught the most important moments and
worked them up. You can find all the videos on the ITS Vienna 2012

<p><strong>Ministerial Round Table with top-class political cast
declares to commonly force the deployment of Intelligent Transport
Systems</strong></p>

<p>Vienna (OTS/BMVIT) - During one week the 19th ITS
World Congress showcased the latest developments within the field
of Intelligent Transport Systems to an expert audience and also to
the public at large on the Public Day. Doris Bures, Austrian
Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology, on whose
initiative the ITS World Congress took place in Vienna for the
first time, summarises positively: "The ITS Vienna 2012 ultimately
marks the evolvement from a purely scientific congress into an
event that shows actual products and renders the benefits of new
developments visible." The development phase of new traffic
technologies is finished - "they are about to make the step from
the laboratory to the street."</p>

<p>With more than 10,000 participants from 90 countries the
19th ITS World Congress set a new record in the number
of visitors. With 2,000 attendees (and only 1,600 seats), the
Opening Ceremony on the first day of the congress was already more
than well-frequented. Among all congress participants were 2,090
women, which amounts to a share of 21 percent. The Public Day
attracted about 2,400 visitors and produced big interest among
pupils. Over 900 children and adolescents, ranging from primary
school to senior classes, participated in the guided tours across
the congress venue to discover all interesting details about the
exhibition and the demonstration programme. The media also showed
big interest in the ITS Vienna 2012 and despatched 183 journalists
in total.</p>

<p>Austrian companies contributed to 15 projects of the demo
programme. Of 23 technical demonstrations overall, eight took place
in the real traffic of Vienna. This emphasises the acknowledgement
for ITS being ready for deployment. The whole demonstration
programme was centrally organised by AustriaTech, which caused a
lot of positive feedback and promises to be regarded as a new
best-practice for future congresses. Overall, 2,480 demos were
conducted, with 550 people already participating on the first day.
The specially developed smartphone app Kongressnavigator was very
popular as well: Over 1,500 people downloaded it for their iPhone
or Android device.</p>
</div>

<p><strong></strong></p>

<p>The exhibition featured over&nbsp;300 companies and ventures
from 25 nations, showcasing their visions about future mobility.
Over 4,500 exhibition visitors made use of this diversity. The
exhibition staff involved 2,400 people in total who knew very well
how to competently inform visitors about their activities in
ITS.</p>

<p>The 19th ITS World Congress in Austria was the first
to feature a Ministerial Round Table with a top-class political
cast: Apart from Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European
Commission, the German transport minister Peter Ramsauer, ten
international ministers, four vice-ministers and two state
secretaries participated in the political discussion under the
direction of Doris Bures, Austrian Minister of Transport,
Innovation and Technology. They commonly declared to force the
deployment of ITS and to stronger integrate the outcomes of future
ITS World Congresses into the structuring of political
frameworks.</p>

<p>"We want to manage the increase of mobility efficiently and
environmentally friendly. Intelligent Transport Systems in general
as well as the conjunction of all means of transport are part of a
forward-looking transport policy to shape traffic systems safer,
cleaner, more efficient and more comfortable", states minister
Doris Bures.</p>

<p>On October 25, 2012 the doors of the ITS world Congress were
opened for everybody. With its 2,500 visitors the Public day was a
huge success. Especially pupils were highly interested in ITS. More
than 900 children and teenagers participated in guided tours and
this way detailed information about the exhibition and the
demonstration programme was presented to them.&nbsp; <a

<p>"How do I get right now exactly where I want?" - ITS Vienna
Region (represented by Klaus Heimbuchner) and VAO (Verkehrsauskunft
Österreich, traffic information Austria, a project of Asfinag,
represented by Martin Müllner) have the answer und present their
solutions on the ITS World Congress Vienna. ITS Vienna Region leads
travellers through the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and
Burgenland on their website <a href="http://www.anachb.at/"
target="_blank">"anachb.at"</a>. VAO is planning to launch their
own online platform for end-users which is supposed to cover
Austria as a whole. Both websites offer multimodal solutions
(combinations of public transport, car including parking, bike,
walking to choose). Their scope is to make travelling easier in a
way that suits traffic policy, e.g. not leading traffic through
residential areas. In order to offer this function in a way that
makes sense, the system needs to be fed the latest information
immediately. The partners which offer this information are the
public transport systems, the police, the traffic agencies and
editorial offices etc. In order to reach nationwide validity VAO
deploys Prisma Solution's GIP (represented by Stefan Kollarits), a
platform that collects all traffic-system and current traffic
information, hiking trails will be added soon. GIP is supposed to
replace or at least support the numerous regional platforms. In
this way synergies can be exploited and redundant costs will be
reduced.<br />
Moderator Bernhard Engleder sees a possibility that the Austrian
pilot project will be expanded to neighbouring regions as a next
step.</p>

<p>Different approaches, solutions and show pieces on the topic of
mobility and ITS were summarised in six project presentations
conducted by schools of various types. The senior year of the
polytechnic HTL Rennweg presented an innovative charging system for
electric vehicles that includes a specially developed smartphone
app as well. In a joint presentation the primary school and the new
secondary school Ranshofen introduced their project "Traumschulweg"
that won this year's VCÖ mobility award. Within this venture they
show dangers caused by individual traffic at the contiguity of
their school and claim for a car-free area around the school
premises.</p>

<p>During the Public day of the ITS World Congress in Vienna pupils
of the technical school Ottakring in Vienna had the opportunity to
ask the ITS experts Katharina Zwick (AustriaTech), Christoph
Wondracek (Siemens), Anita Graser (AIT), Richard Neumann (Swarco)
and Martin Eder (Kapsch) their questions about intelligent
transport solutions, the career of their counterparts or other
similar topics. In sessions of ten minutes interesting dialogues
developed after which a gong gave the signal to switch to the next
expert. Within these talks the technically interested visitors
learned about the future of mobility and the role they could play
therein.</p>

<p>At the close of another interesting day at the ITS Vienna 2012,
the ITS community gathered at the sold out Vienna Hofburg for a
Gala Dinner and the first ever ITS Ball. After an exquisite
three-course-dinner, there were different kinds of musical
entertainment in each room. The evening found its culmination in
the midnight quadrille under the guidance of Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer
himself.</p>

<p>To choose between the uncountable number of huge, mid-sized and
small museums, exhibitions and historic buildings in Vienna seems
to be impossible. But there are some reference points like the
Palace of Schönbrunn, the Emperors' summer residence with its
luxuriant rooms, its giant artistic park and the Gloriette as a
sightseeing point on the top of the hill of Schönbrunn. And you
can't leave without at least passing by the Palace of Belvedere and
its beautiful gardens. There is also a Klimt-Exhibition taking
place in celebration of Klimt's 150th birthday. If it comes to the
museums it is on you to choose between art (e.g. <a
href="http://www.albertina.at/en" target="_blank"
title="Homepage Albertina">Albertina</a>), biology (e.g. <a
href="http://www.nhm-wien.ac.at/en" target="_blank"

History</a>), technology (Technology Museum), history (e.g. <a
href="http://www.ethno-museum.ac.at/en/" target="_blank"
title="Homepage Völkerkundemuseum">Museum of Ethnology</a>), the
castles (again) as a focus. NB: Most museums close at 7 pm the
latest.</p>

<p>On the public day of the ITS World Congress 2012 four groups of
students, who participated in a three-day ITS workshop initiated by
the Austrian Road Safety Board, had the chance to present their
projects to the public. They generated exciting ideas for the next
30 years but also dealt with current solutions and services to
understand them better. Goal of the workshop was to engage the
future generation for the world of intelligent transport solutions
by giving them the chance to participate in real projects e.g. from
ASFINAG, qando and BikeCityGuide.</p>
